Are you aware that there are several types of situations that are available to help improve your oral health by applying treatments without the risk of discomfort or pain? If you need a complex procedure done such as an oral surgery or an extraction, it may require the use of a sedative that will put you asleep or put you in a state of relaxation. Through sedation dentistry, several options are available to calm and relax you.
In situations where an individual requires additional oral health care procedures, it is important to think about your options for sedation. Various choices include inhaled minimal sedation, oral sedation, intravenous moderate sedation and general anesthesia. Each one varies in degree and how it will affect your oral health in terms of the amount of sedative applied.
For an inhaled sedation, also known as a gas sedation, mild relaxants can be given. These do wear off rather quickly and are not to be used for invasive procedures. However, with oral sedation, which is applied via a pill or intravenous moderate sedation, which is applied through an injection into your bloodstream, dosages can be adjusted from mild relaxants up to putting a patient to sleep. For the deepest levels of sedation, general anesthesia will be required. While under the effects of anesthesia, a patient will not wake up until the anesthesia either wears off or the condition is reversed through the use of another medication.
