Root
Canals
Endodontic ('en-do-don-tik') treatments, also known as
'root canals' can help save in infected tooth from being
extracted. Usually it is a relatively simple procedure in
which the dentist removes the infected tissue and nerves
inside the tooth and then seals the tooth with a temporary
filling. Occasionally it is necessary to let the tooth drain
for a day or two before the tooth can be sealed permanently.
In these cases, you will be given a temporary filling to
protect the tooth while it drains. On your next visit, the
temporary filling is removed and the infected area is again
cleaned and filled with a permanent filling. The final step is
then to crown the tooth with a gold or porcelain crown so that
you can chew comfortably on it.
